Not every ceiling box can safely hold a fan
A standard light fixture box is rated to hold maybe 50 pounds, hanging still. A ceiling fan is heavier, spins, and vibrates — it needs a fan-rated box secured to a joist or brace, not just screwed into drywall. Installing a fan on the wrong box is one of the more common DIY mistakes we see, and it can eventually work loose and fall.

Only if that box is fan-rated. Many aren't. We check the box rating first and replace it with a properly rated one if needed, before mounting the fan.
Can you add a wall switch for a new ceiling fan?
